This past weekend, Minister of Government Services, Harinder Takhar, attended to the annual Christmas and New Year celebration hosted by the Canadian Malayalee Association. Preeti Saran, Consul General of India and Dipika Damerla, MPP of Cooksville was also in attendance.

Guests were greeted by Thomas Thomas, former President of the Canadian Malayalee Association.

CMA Annual Family Picnic 2011

Canadian Malayalee Association will have its Annual Family Picnic on Labour Day September 5, 2011 Monday. Enjoy Kerala dishes, thattukada, BBQ and sports activities with your family and friends.

All Canada Tug-of-war competition will commence at 3:00 PM. Ever-rolling Trophy and Cash Award will be awarded for the winners. Each team should be limited to 500 kg in weight. Registration for each team is $50.

Admiral Best Singer -2011 will be awarded to the best performer in the singing competition.

Onam at Maroli

Maroli showcases the traditional OnaSadhya, the kerala vegetarian meal on 3rd september,saturday. between 12:00PM to 4:00 PM.

Onam is traditionally a harvest festival and earlier the people of Kerala used to entirely depend on agriculture. Onam, which breaks all barriers of caste, creed and religion, is the most anticipated festival in Kerala and by Malayalis around the world. Thiruonam is the day when the Asura King Mahabali .(Maveli) comes to visit his subjects. Each house in Kerala decks up to welcome King Maveli, who during his reign made the ideas of a utopian rule a reality. Onam is celebrated over four days – first Onam ,Second Onam or the most important day of Onam is Thiruonam and 4th day the Naalam Onam.The preparation for Onam begins on the Atham nakshatram day in the Malayalam Chingam month (August – September).

Atham falls around 10 days before Thiruonam. Onam festival begins on Atham day, around 10 days before Thiruonam.

People begin purchases for the onam which include new dresses for all the people in the family. During these ten days children and women prepare the floral design called Pookkalam in front of their houses to welcome King Maveli.

Another major preparation is for the grand onam feast – Onam Sadya. On the Tiruvonam day members of the family gather together, usually at the ancestral home, for Onasadya (traditional Onam feast) served on plantain leaves.

Maroli , the Indian Kerala Restaurant,bring this Onam feast to Toronto ,allowing foodies access to this Unique Indian culinary excellence with Kerala’ Flower festival ONAM being showcased .This intimate experience is open to the public on September 3rd .
