Work Permit
The Work Permit Process
How temporary foreign workers are brought in Canada:
- Employer recruits foreign worker from overseas.
- Employer posts job offer in federal job centre for at least seven days.
- If no takers, a contract is signed with foreign worker. Employer applies for Labour Market Opinion (LMO) from Service Canada, which verifies no Canadians are available to do the job and offer is consistent with Canadian wages and working conditions.
- If approved, prospective worker applies for a $150 work permit at overseas Candian visa post. As of Febraury, a work permit takes 32 days to process.
- It is illegal for employers and recruiters to a recruitment fee, a placement fee or for transportation costs to Canada.
- Contract can be offered for up to two years. When job ends, the worker must leave for four months before reapplying for a new permit.
