Chenda Melam & Thaalapoli at Brampton

On Dec 19th 2010, the Shaw Public School in Brampton resounded with the beat of ethnic drums and cymbals called ‘Chenda melam’ and a full ceremonial procession of women and children holding plates filled with lamps, flowers and rice – ‘Thaalappoli’. It was part of the massive Mandalam celebrations dedicated to one of the Hindu deities, Lord Ayyappa, organized by the Guruvayurappan Temple of Brampton.
Over 200 devotees sang hymns and participated in the Ayyappa pooja and Vilakku pooja lead by the Temple’s, Chief Priest Divakaran Namboothiripad, formerly Chief Priest at the famed Guruvayur Temple, Kerala, India in 1992. Light snacks ‘prasad’ and the special ‘Aravana’ payasam were also distributed.
This truly uplifting spiritual experience was covered by media including the Asian Television Network.
The Temple is currently functioning from a temporary location. The permanent structure will be built close to the intersection of Country side Drive and Torbram Road in Brampton.  In the words of the President of the Temple’s Board of Directors Dr.K.Kutty, the vision of the Temple is to build a temple and also develop a community centre in it for it to become a place to help the needy and new immigrants whatever be their background, to interact, to network and to teach our children about our cultural heritage and religious values.
