Job Hunting Tips in Canada
With highly qualified immigrant coming to Canada, the job market is getting more competitive. This is good for the economy provided the country makes use of its intellectuals. However, new comers in Canada may find it, especially those who does not have experince in North America. One of the reasons why new comers find hard landing in a good job is because the employers demand “Candian Experience”. Of course thats not something that can be gained without opportunities. However, there is always a way to get some preferences over other. Hope the following tips would help you.
1. Prepare a resume which will promote on your behalf. I belong to the IT world and always thought 6 to 7 page resume would help to explain what I am. No.. never do it. You can always have it as a secondary one if a recruiter request it. Its the HR or the recruiter who is gonna see your resume first. It all takes less than a minute to decide whether your resume end up in trash or not. Prepare a short and concise one (2 pages maximum). Have some one (senior in the industry) take a look at your resume before you present it.
2. Try to make use of some of the online resume templates at Microsoft. They are really helpful. You have it there for any industry.
3. Whenever you approach to a recruiter or get called, always be courteous. Example – “Good morning. How are you today?” – It may sound silly, but those couple of words make a difference.
4. Prepare to speak on your resume. Never try to copy and paste something which you cant talk about.
5. Try to be clean, presentable and always be courteous in your actions. These guys out here are good in that and they expect us to be the same.
6. Vacancies usually show up every quarter of the year – ie January, April, July, and October. Search intensively and be prepared for these months.
7. Prepare a cover letter which should contain words convincing the recruiter that you are the best candidate for the job. Start with words like -
Dear Hiring Manager:
Are you searching for an Application Developer with expertise in project management and team leadership? I specialize in creating and implementing high-performance software that directly impact growth and profitability of one of the leading firm.
Catch the recruiter’s attention at the first impression. If you are sending your resume by email, then use the content of the cover letter as the body of the email.
8. If you are requested to attend a telephonic interview then have the phone free during that time and try to attend the call where there is no distraction and noise.
9. If you think you need to take a certification for the kind of job you are looking for, then go for it if its not expensive. For certifications always give you preference.
